J.N. Duggan - author and historical biographer

J.N. Duggan is the author of historical biographies of Sophia, Electress of Hanover (1630-1714) and Irish rationalist philosopher, John Toland (1670-1722), both of which are available to buy online from this website, as well as in all good bookshops.

She is currently working on a life of Hans Axel Fersen, friend and confidante of Marie Antoinette. She is also involved, in an editorial capacity, in the publication of new editions the works of John Toland.

Her biography, Sophia of Hanover: from Winter Princess to Heiress of Great Britain, 1630-1714 was published in 2010 by Peter Owen Publishers, London. It was Majesty Magazine'sBook of the Month upon release. Having long been fascinated by the subject she translated a considerable proportion of Sophia's writings from the original French and German to reveal "a remarkable portrait of a remarkable woman."

She is also the author of John Toland: Ireland's Forgotten Philosopher, Scholar ... and Heretic, also published in 2010. She came upon the name and reputation of Toland through her research for her biography of Sophia of Hanover:

She has been involved, in an editorial capacity, in the re-issuing of several important works of the Irish philosopher, John Toland (1670-1722). This includes his 1714 pamphlet, Reasons for Naturalizing the Jews in Great Britain and Ireland, which has been published in print and e-book editions. An Account of the Courts of Prussia and Hanover was first published in 1705 and is also available in a modern edition, in both print and e-book formats.

J.N. Duggan was born in Sheffield, England in 1938 but came to live in Ireland at the age of 12. She returned to Sheffield to train as a nurse and later completed a BSc at University College Dublin. She now lives in Galway.
