Sophia of Hanover: from Winter Princess to Heiress of Great Britain, 1630-1714
This biography of Sophia, Electress of Hanover (1630-1714) by J.N. Duggan shows her to be much more than a crucial link in the lineage of the English throne.
Her memoirs, which she wrote at the age of 50 and her correspondence which date from 1658 - quoted extensively for the first time in this volume - reveal a gifted and prolific chronicler of her times. They offer the reader a fascinating insider's view of life at the top echelons of society in the seventeenth and eighteenth century Europe: the politics, intrigue and daily life in the royal houses, to many of which she was related by blood or marriage.
The author has translated a considerable proportion of Sophia's writings from the original French and German. The volume also contains colour illustrations, index, bibliography, maps, family trees, selected letters. Together they provide a remarkable portrait of a remarkable woman.

John Toland: Ireland's Forgotten Philosopher, Scholar and Heretic
Examining the life and work of John Toland, this short biography and critical appraisal accounts for his role as a philosopher of international renown, prolific writer on important political and religious issues of his day, the first person to be called a freethinker - by Bishop Berkeley.
In his considerable volume of writings, he challenged political and ecclesiastical authority. He is chiefly remembered today for what was in fact his first work, Christianity Not Mysterious (1696) - a book which was denounced in the English and Irish Parliaments and publicly burned in Dublin.
This volume includes the most comprehensive bibliography of John Toland works, his life and times available to date. 48 pages including illustrations, bibliography and chronology. Further information including reviews ...
